Day 4, A Week in the Dorms

By Ashlie Baker, IVA Juniors

Well hello! My name is Ashlie Baker and I am proud to say that I am a member of the Junior Intermountain High Performance team here in Salt Lake City, Utah. We had a grand time staying in the dorms at Westminster College. While staying there, there were many opportunities to socialize with other teams, making the experience all the more fun. We played some sand volleyball, had an ice cream social, and enjoyed each others company very much.

Our author is #2

For a start, we played some good ole sand volleyball about every night. Weird huh? We were actually good at it. Anyway, in the beginning of the week, it just seemed as though individual teams owned the court for a while. By the end of the tournament, all the teams were lined up in rows randomly, playing our favorite game... queens. Not only were there some good digs, hits, and blocks, but there was an incomprehensible amount of laughter and fun. It was neat how so many people living different lives could get along and have so much fun together playing a sport in which we all have a love for. I thought it was awesome to see that many participants could not get enough of the game, considering that one tiring match would end and we would immediately get back onto the court and go at it again.

Not only was there activity on the sand court, but there was a whole lot of fun off the court too. It was neat seeing the Chinese appreciate the beautiful USA National Anthem which was sung by our own USA volleyball girls that night. It sounded wonderful and all the Chinese could say was, "again, again", and get their cameras out, taking pictures of them as if they were pop stars. Just a couple yards away from that, people were lined up in rows sitting across the grass hill enjoying the night together. Photos were shot at a constant tempo from day one. One of my favorite pictures was of Emily Toone on the IMJR team, next to little Scotty Livesay on the NCWB team; a difference in height of about three feet. Well, I am exaggerating a bit, but it still was a fun picture.

On the 27th there was a social event in which all the teams got together to enjoy some nice, nutritious ice cream after dinner in the cafeteria. Many would have to admit that it wasn't all that bad eating in the college cafeteria. Not only was the food pretty good, but many looked forward to see who would happen to show up. That night, there was music, games, and talk for quite awhile until we, of course, moved to the court. That night was probably the most social night of them all in which everyone got to meet everyone.

So many friendships have been made, giving us all a long lasting grandiose experience! Remember it always.
