The motor scooter diaries….

By: Meghan, Kamryn, Holland, Mariah and Taelor of Jacksonville, FL (JJVA)
As told to: Claire Bear of Mountain Brook, AL (BVC)

Today we saddled our custom hogs (ok, maybe more like piggies) for a day on the road. Mariah rode with Big, Holland with Ceej, Lexi with Nurse Jenny and Marissa with Doc, Jessi and “Road Rage Rhonda” were on the 4-wheeler, Julia with Jazzy Jeff, Taelor with Mad Meghan and Kamryn with Rico Suave (ahhhhh!!), while Marion took on the challenges alone. We put on our sweet, brain buckets and headed for the first stop.  On the way to fill up our thirsty steeds, we rode past the first casualty of the day: Jen and Carling had already had a losing battle with a parked car!  Our journey took us along the coastline, following our leader Cory.  Kamryn and Rico had the camera rolling, taking videos and speeding past people taking action shots.  At our first town the adults enjoyed a cup o’ joe and the kids ate ice cream and waded in the water.  Our group hopped back on the scooters and took off to our next destination, “ridin’ dirty”.

Beach after beach, our tour became better than imagined.  After some racing on the roads, our stomachs told us it was time for lunch.  We stopped and ate at “Golden Beach”, a spectacular, sandy beach with a restaurant to match.  After pita paired with tzatziki, a chef salad made its way in front of Kamryn and Holland, a club sandwich with salt-less chips in front of Meghan, Marion and Taelor, and finally, Julia and Alexia got their spaghetti with shrimps.  When ordered, little did they know that the shrimps would have just been summoned from their salty coves and jumped onto their plates.  There wasn’t just a head, but eyes, antennae, legs, spine, and shell, the whole shebang.  Julia, who devoured the equivalent of a loaf of bread did not eat all of her shrimps, even though she got her dad to peel them for her.  Alexia attacked the shrimp like a starving shark and hammered them all down.  Lunch was followed by quarreling over the masks and snorkels, even though there was nothing to see but sand and a few crusty rocks.  We were asked to come out of the water to dry off before setting of on our adventure once more.  Mrs. Jenny’s scooter would not start at first, but we were reassured it was in fine working condition after Saint Rico revved it up.  Falling in line, we made our way up to the main road again, and with camera’s in hand, and set off down the dusty byways.

With Cory in the lead, we ventured off the paved roads into unfamiliar territory, heading to new undiscovered beaches.  We were baking in the Greece sun, ready for our next dip into the cool refreshing sea.  The gravel road made for an interesting journey around the winding path, until we finally reached our final beach of the day.  Most of the girls headed out into the crystal clear water, while the parents opted to lounge around and take a quick nap.  After discovering practically no inhabitants in this amazing cove, Marissa victoriously brought a small starfish to the surface for the group to see.  The parents called us in from our adventure in the sea, and it was time to head back to our hotel.  The sun had worn us out, along with baking our skin to a nice red-brown tint.  The ride back entailed two pit-stops, as some of the scooters, and people, needed refueling.

Back at the hotel, we managed to meet up with those who had remained at the Hotel Polos for a bit of R&R, and swapped stories of the day.  We found Whitney, Jodie, Lauren, Sarah, Stacey and Megan C. who had gone snorkeling and were enthralled with Lauren’s underwater pictures thanks to her camera’s amazing waterproof ability.  The day had left us with lifelong memories of our Greece adventures and ready and eager to start up tomorrow’s adventures at Golden Beach.
