Our author about ready to crush a “31” in Rivas.

Greetings from Nicaragua. Day 7 was a comparably slow day. We were told to meet at 10:30 in the lobby of our hotel in Granada to leave for San Juan del Sur. Other than that, we were left to our own devices to entertain ourselves. My roommates and I (Jennifer Fry and Kelly Weaver) got up and went to Kathy’s Waffle House (umm, umm, good) and had a great breakfast. With full stomachs, we went in search of shopping and internet access.

Editor’s Note: Today was also Flag Day in Nicaragua. Apparently the festivities in Granada included a massive parade of all the local school kids and school bands.

As instructed, we meet in the lobby at 10:30am packed and ready to go. We loaded all our stuff onto the bus and boarded according to how well we felt (the sickest in the front and the healthiest in the back). The trip was uneventful and I fell asleep (Yeah!). When we got to San Juan del Sur, we all went off to get our own lunches and explore the town a little. At 2:30 we once again boarded the bus and drove to the town of Rivas where we would be playing volleyball.

The gym in Rivas.

When we got there, it turned out that there had been a miscommunication and we were actually playing two hours later than had been planned. In an attempt to occupy some time we took a tour around the town. On our tour we meet the Head of Sports and Recreation for the Mayor’s Office. We also saw the city hall (and its chicken yard). We then went to a restaurant where we enjoyed ice cream and sodas. Some members of the team (aka Jenna) entertained themselves by using their ice cream as lipstick, much to the amusement of others.

Many thanks to the Mayor and Mayor’s office in Rivas for their hospitality.

After it started raining, we got on the bus and went back to the outdoor gym we were playing. There we meet the mayor of Rivas. He told us that he was happy we came and hoped we could come back next year. The junior team played the first game against the local league team from Rivas. The scores were 20-25, 25-22, and 13-15. In the second game, the senior team played the Nicaraguan Junior National Team once again. The scores for were 25-11, 22-25, 25-20 and 25-12. Both games were hard and the teams played hard in the heat and humidity.

Coach Camacho and his girls with the USA Juniors.

On the bus ride back to San Juan del Sur, the girls entertained themselves by joking and talking. We that was until we saw the cow laying on the side of the road. It turns out that the cow had been hit by a car and had left this world. Once back in town, we were once again allowed to get our own food. Most of the team ended up going to Big Waves Dave’s, which was some good eating. After dinner everyone returned to their rooms for showers and much desired rest.
