Northern Lights 18's in Italy '05

Day 1, March 20, 2005
By Courtney Cowles

Today started out with the longest plane ride of my life. We departed from Minnesota around 9:00pm and arrived in Amsterdam at 5:00 in the morning (American time). The plane ride was around 8 hours and 15 minutes. We then had a 4-hour lay over before leaving for Rome. This plane ride was a lot shorter, only like 1 hour and 50 minutes. We found that you get fed a lot on international flights. It seemed like every 30 minutes they were bringing us something else to eat. On the first flight we had a dinner meal of either vegetarian or chicken. They also gave us breakfast of a bagel and fruit. On the second flight we were given cheese melted in bread, and a pasta salad, with a side of dessert. When we arrived in Rome we were picked up by Tim at the airport and he took us to our hotel.

On the bus from the airport to Rome City Center

We found out that the driving is really different then what we are used to America. We had a lot of fun watching the people on the mopeds fly by using what it seemed like no lines at all! After arriving at the hotel at about 8:00pm, we got dressed and went out to eat at a restaurant that was right next door to the hotel. The food was extremely good, including everything from pizza to risotto to gnocchi.

Dinner, Day 1 in Rome!

When we were done eating we went out to the train station to get some money from the ATM machines and orient ourselves a bit. After that we went to get some ice cream (gelato) and coffee. Overall this was a really long day or 2 days! But things can only get so much better tomorrow after we get some sleep.
