Kaepa Northern Lights European Tour: July 10-22, 2005

Northern Lights European Tour 2005
Day One: Amsterdam, Netherlands

By Allie Oelke, Northern Lights 16-1’s

After an extremely long flight and a few scares at the airport, we are now in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Starting off the trip, my ticket was messed up and Curt spent close to an hour fixing all the problems. I was scared that I wasn’t even going to make it onto the flight, but I finally did during the last boarding call. The plane ride went very well as we teams passed the time by drawing fake tattoos onto our bodies to entertain ourselves as many of us couldn’t sleep. Now, we are paying for it as we are all struggling to keep our eyes open given that we missed a night’s sleep. When we arrived in Amsterdam, we visited a traditional Dutch village where we learned how they make wooden clogs that Holland is famous for.

Next, we came back and checked into our hotel. It’s a cute little hotel and some of the showers are a little bit harder to work as I learned. After that, we went shopping and had lunch at a square called Leidseplin. Everything is much different here and it was exciting to see the many differences between our cultures. In the square, we saw many different performers; like break-dancers and a soccer player who could continue heading the soccer ball while climbing a tree.

We went on a 75- minute boat ride through the canals. The views were amazing and we had fun looking at all of the houseboats, which were tied to the sides of the canals.

Right now, we are eating pancakes at one of the restaurants around here. These aren’t just ordinary pancakes though; they have fruits, chocolate, and even many different kinds of food on them. Adam was even brave enough to try an Egyptian one which had lamb meat on it. Tomorrow, we are looking forward to see the Anne Frank house and finally start to play.
