Day Four
By Elizabeth Kern, U-17’s

Liz enjoying Rothenburg

We awoke this morning to sunlight in the windows of our hostel and the loud, obnoxious ringing of our alarm clocks. One by one we rolled out of bed and trudged down to breakfast still in our p.j’s. We realized only today that everyone else at breakfast was dressed for the day. Opps! O well, we’re on vacation right?

At 10:00 the bus picked us up and we were off to Rothenburg. I would tell you it was a beautiful four-hour trip, but like most of the girls, I was sleeping much of the way. Although, I was awakened by some of the 16’s playing a clapping game at the end of the ride! Don’t worry, I still love you guys.

Upon arrival we found ourselves at a quaint family run hotel. Each room was different and to say the least, larger than those in the hostel. After a quick unload we had a chance to tour the city on our own. We only have one night here so we were excited to explore this new place. Now, Rothenburg is not your average German city. It’s many shops and hotels are surrounded by a wall. This wall was built for protection years ago. Today it stands as a reminder of the past. Also, one can get some great pictures (or I should say photos) from atop the wall looking down into the valley. So we capitalized on our opportunity and after some group photos by the wall, we all split into groups to wander and soak in the culture. This definitely wasn’t a huge shopping center as was Munster, but we did have a few buys. Alyssa got the cutest skirt and Nat bought a nice sweatshirt for someone at home.

Northern Lights outside the famous walled city.

By about 7:00 pm or 19:00 most of us had had enough exploring so we headed back to the hotel for a nice dinner. And wow! It was amazing. It started with a clear seasoned broth. Then we had this delicious meat in it’s own gravy. On top we added spatzle and cooked mixed vegetables. Finally we ended the meal with eis (ice cream). The traditional German meal.

NL favorite German word

Again we have the evening to ourselves to do some final exploring before we head out in the morning. We have a 10:30 (22:30) curfew though. We don’t need any crabby girls. Right ladies? Especially on day four!
