Day 11
By Tawny Dahmes & Kresson Vreeman, U16’s team
Today was quite an eventful day. It began with the usual breakfast, followed by a trip up the mountain on a chair lift to a high ropes course. The 16’s and 17’s were split up into separate teams, strapped into harnesses, and forced to wear construction helmets. We were ready to face and conquer our biggest fears.

The High Ropes Course in Maribor
We started the day off by climbing to the top of a tall, wooden pole that narrowed at the top. We were to stand up on it and balance while it shook like crazy, turn 180 degrees, and do a little jiggle before we jumped off. Even though Naomi was scared the most of heights, she was very brave and volunteered to go first. She made it all the way to the top before she fell and we were all so proud of her.
Next we were strapped to a steel rope and pulled by our team to the top of a pole, overlooking the entire city. When we were ready, we pulled a cord that released the harness and allowed us to swing back and forth and enjoy the view of Maribor.
The 17’s started off by climbing a pole onto a platform connected to many obstacles. They were to make their way across a rope bridge with wooden blocks scattered as steps. Next they were to jump from one wooden platform to another without falling to the ground 30 feet below. After that they were challenged by rope swings, ladders, and a rounded, wooden log.

Northern Lights after completing the Ropes Course
To get down the mountain, we rode in mini sleds connected to a metal rail, which was called an Alpine Slide. Once at the bottom, Amanda, Alyssa, Jo, and Tawny had races rolling down the steep hill. Others went and took naps or laid by the pool. At 2:00, the adults went for a wine tasting in a cellar underneath the city.

For dinner, everyone rode the gondola to the top of the mountain for dinner. We had another traditional Slovenian meal, consisting of chicken and beef kabobs, potatoes, bratwursts, coleslaw, and Serbian ham and beans. The dessert we had was the second best of the trip, an apple strudel. While we waited for the 8:00 ride down the mountain, some played kick the can and others warmed up by the still hot grill. When we met back at the hotel, we had until 10:00 to pack up our things and get to bed because tomorrow we have to leave at 7 a.m. on an 8 hour bus ride!!!!!!!!!!!
