Team VolleyHut’s Sibillini Journal 2005
Volume 5: Day 3 of Competition, Wednesday, June 29, 2005

By Brynn Maurer, University of San Francisco

Once again, Team VolleyHut awoke at an early time in the morning to spend another fabulous, sunny day at the beach. I’m not much of a morning person but when the beach is in action I will get up at any time of day with happiness due to living in California where the beach is my second home. We all ran out of the van ready to cool down in the sea and catch some rays. After some relaxing time in the sun listening to music and reading, it was time to start the beach volleyball tournament.

This tourney consisted of teams of three competing against each other. We played the first match against the Hungarians from the Vasas Budapest team. Since we only played one game to 15 it was difficult to recover after going down 13-6. In the middle of the match we started to play much better and score some points, but Vasas pulled out the win 15-9. Now that we were covered in sand we were ready to go back in the water. After a couple more hours in the sun I was ready to go back to the monastery and take a nap before the big match tonight., but just as our van was leaving the beach, it broke down.

Once again I was up for another adventure in Italy. After sitting on the side of the road for an hour waiting for another van, Team VolleyHut was forced to push the van to the side of the road. Finally we got a ride back to the monastery just in time to relax a little bit before we had to head off to another game. We played OOK Lazarevac from Belgrade, and took the Serbians through five strenuous games. Unfortunately we lost. We by no means played a good match, but the Serbians played pretty well together to beat us. They were a pretty short team, but had good blocking and defensive fundamentals and touched almost every ball we hit. It was surely our match to win though and we just didn’t show up. It was a tough loss for VolleyHut. The ride back in the bus was a quite ride. We got back to our rooms and passed out.
