The Third Annual European Global Challenge will again be held in the seaside town of Pula, Croatia. Croatia, The Land of a Thousand Islands, is a country that offers gorgeous coastline on the turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea. Numerous coastal resorts, Roman ruins, the capital city of Zagreb, and pleasant weather, all contribute to Croatia's position as a top European destination.

Pula, the largest city in the Region of Istria, is located at the southern tip of the Istrian Peninsula, and 280 km (173 miles) east of Zagreb. There are 90,000 people in the metropolitan area of Pula. Historically, Pula is known for it’s winemaking, fishing, shipbuilding, and tourism. Today, you can still experience all of these and more.

Pula has a number of different tourist attractions. Perhaps the most well known is the first century Roman amphitheatre (known to many as the coliseum), which is the sixth largest of its kind in the world. It is locally referred to as the Arena. The Twin Gates (also known as Porta Gemina) is one of the few gates that still remains after city walls were removed at the beginning of the 19th century. The Augustan Forum, which was once the Roman commercial and administrative center, is still the main administrative and legislative center of the city. This classic European square is the site of the Opening Ceremonies, as well as various cafes and restaurants. Pula is home to quite a few churches including the chapel of St. Mary Formosa (6th century), the church of St. Francis (13th century), the cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (6th century), and the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas (6th century). The star-shaped castle is situated on top of the central hill of the old city, and now houses the Historical Museum of Istria. You will also find the Archaeological Museum of Istria in the park close to the Twin Gates.

Due to its political history, Pula has a cultural mix of people and languages from both the Mediterranean and Central Europe. You will find quite a few people who speak a second (and perhaps a third and fourth) language. Most commonly these languages are Italian, German, and English. Food is a large part of any culture and in this coastal region you can see Greek, Roman, and Mediterranean influence. Pula is a great place to try fish and calamari, and anywhere in the country you can always find a tasty and memorable mixed grill.
