Global Challenge 2008 - Boys
August 8, 2008 -- Matches vs Northern California and United Arab Emirates
By Torey Darin, OPP, Balboa 17 White

The day started out weak, with a late wake up call. We had to rush down to breakfast for some well done hot chocolate. It goes down smooth. Some of us slept right through breakfast and almost missed the vans to the gym. We got to the gym and we had to wait around for what seemed like forever to eat lunch. We saw the Nor Cal team bounce a couple against the Slovenian Team and before we knew it, it was our turn to play. It was an uncalled for close first game, but due to a few "good timeouts" we pulled out the victory. But we decided the next game to show Nor Cal what real California volleyball is like. We took it to them the next two games with some good kills by "Slick Rick" (Eric Kay)  to finish the second game. And with some good all around play by the team, utter domination was achieved in the third (25-15).

After the Nor Cal match, Ammo (Ryan Ammerman) bought us all gelatos, again. He also lost badly in a few well played card games by the team, but that is beside the point.

We then traveled to the Ljudski Center (home of the local professional volleyball and futbol teams) to play our new-found rivals, the United Arab Emirates. We were really pumped to beat that team, because our two previous attempts were futile. We started off strong but they managed to pull out a victory out in the first game. We were full of adrenaline which carried us
through the games to follow. We played a really tough second game and went into extra points. But yet again, we let another game from the UAE slip through our fingers. But some sparked play by Paul Goodman in the third, helped us to a victory in our first game against our closely matched rivals. We now knew that we could beat that team so we took it to them in the fourth game to take it to a deciding fifth game. We started off strong but our endurance faded away in the closing points of that match to hand the UAE the match. Afterwards however, we found out that the UAE head coach said that our team has improved much and that we as a team are "fighters."

After the sour taste that game left in our mouths, we headed out for dinner and then to a night out on the town. We got some more gelatos and then drank our sorrows away...just kidding. We got some good French fries from McDonalds and called it a night.
