Canyon Crest Europe Trip July 2008

Journal 12

Day 12,

Figures that I would be writing the final day.  This day began as expected, with an overnight sleeping train from Prague to Budapest.  Aside from the poop smell by our bench and the bugs in the park, waiting for the train was uneventful.  After a surprisingly comfortable sleep on the train (9 hours, it was cheaper to fly out of Budapest) we arrived at the airport for some breakfast, and a 4 hour wait for our flight.  And now the fun begins….  Our flight from Budapest to New York was delayed about an hour.  This made for an interesting connection in New York, considering we had to collect our luggage, go through customs, then go through security again to make our flight.  By the time we got of the plane, we had 45 minutes to get all this done.  We cleared customs with 5 minutes to go before our flight and ran.  It looked like the bulls were running in JFK, with 16 of us running frantically through the airport; everyone was staring of course.  We get to our gate, which naturally was the furthest gate possible from customs, to find that our plane had not even arrived yet! Delayed…..Pee stop, snacks and an hour later we got on the plane to Dallas.  Only, the plane sat on the tarmac for nearly 2 hours, 1st described as technical difficulty and then storm winds.  The only thing we could do was watch Austin Powers on my computer to keep us entertained.  The flight attendant was, quite crabby with everyone.  We got on the phones and started calling our families,   Not only would we miss our connector, even if they held the plane for us, San Diego prohibits flying after 11:30 due to a noise ordinance.  When we arrived in Dallas, the agent there gave us rooms at the Wyndham and food vouchers.  We stayed over night and left the next day to San Diego on 2 different flights, some of us flying 1st class!

Not the best way to end a fantastic trip, but I think the last 48 hours of travel (yes, 48 hours total) we spent will pale in comparison to the great times we had in Europe.

Coach Haas (where will we go next time? Hhmmmmmmm)

Great quotes from Danielle during the trip:

“I love cats” (randomly)

Speaking with a woman with a very thick accent on flight to Budapest, who we find out is going to her father’s funeral, to which Danielle responds, “Oh, that’s so nice”

We are playing charades and Danielle is having difficulty getting her team to say the movie title “Polly.” I tell her to try sounds like, and Danielle blurts out “oh, oh, Collie!” (Out loud).
