Melissa Stadelman discusses the team's stay in Venice.
May 15, 2007
VENICE, Italy - After getting a quick preview of Venice last night, we were all excited to spend all day in the city. We started early in the morning and spent the majority of the day sightseeing, shopping, and of course trying out as much Italian food as possible. Starting at the Grand Canal, Venice's major waterway, we made our way between the shops and the water to the Rialto Bridge.
The vendors were selling all types of items that were a part of the city, such as purses, clothing, glass plates, jewelry, soccer jerseys and masks. It is interesting to see what items are sold in different cities. We wandered through the streets of Venice, casually shopping and looking for souvenirs. There was so much going on that we had trouble deciding where to go next. The streets themselves were very unique and cannot be described in a photograph. It was hard to find our way around because the combination of bridges and alleyways was confusing, but that made it even more fun I guess!
After getting lost a few times and taking a lunch break, we managed to find St. Mark's square. The feeling was awesome as we stepped out of the alleyway we had been pushing through and into the square. We were greeted with the sight of thousands of people and the beautiful buildings. Also in the scene were the pigeons that were waiting to be fed by all of the tourists. In the square we saw building such as Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Basilica, both of which were breathtaking. Later that evening the team met up for dinner together for our last night in the city. We are packing up tonight to prepare for a four-hour train ride to Rome tomorrow morning, where we will spend our last two days of the trip. Check back tomorrow for another update!
