Stephanie Ross discusses the team's visit to Maribor.
May 8, 2007
MARIBOR, Solvenia - We woke up this morning to a three-hour van trip to Maribor, Slovenia. The hotel we are staying at is right on the side of a mountain directly connected to a world cup ski resort. At this location you are able to look down over the city and the view is incredible. After unpacking, the team took a ski lift up to a higher point on the mountain where we ate a traditional Slovenian lunch including goulash and a dessert. Following lunch we were up for the challenge of the ropes course. The first obstacle was climbing up a pole, standing on the top and rotating 180 degrees. It was a lot harder than it looked but eventually everyone completed the task. Next up was a partner activity that involved climbing up a swinging ladder using only your partner and a small rope to get to the top. The higher up, the more difficult it became. This task was incredibly difficult and required a lot of arm and leg strength. It was equivalent to a Kim King workout!! Only one pair was able to complete the challenge......Melissa Stadelman and I finished it in 11 minutes. Our final activity was a giant human swing that was awesome. Swinging upside down overlooking the entire city of Maribor was an unforgettable feeling.
After resting for a couple of hours we headed back up the mountain for dinner, this time in a four-person enclosed gondola. The food at dinner was awesome. Europeans really know how to eat!! Buffet-style sausage, beans, potatoes and streudel made for some happy players. We are calling it an early night tonight to prepare for our first match in a couple of days tomorrow afternoon. Check back tomorrow to see how we did and for continued updates!!
