Union College Nicaragua 2009

Day 1, by Stephanie Pateman

Most of our expectations for Nicaragua have been or surpassed within our first 24 hours.  Our first adventure led us to a National Park where we hiked to see Volcano Masaya and its 5 craters.   Our strenuous hike paid off when we reached the highest ridge of one of the craters.  The hike was breath-taking, not because the physical exhaustion, but because of the unobstructed view of the countryside which continued as far as the eye could see.  We witnessed an active volcano as smoke continued to bellow out of it.  A first for many!  A transition from nature to history and politics took us to Nicaragua's Catedral de La Inmaculada where our tour guide taught us about the history of the country and past political leaders. This notable gathering place was made up of the Casa de Los Pueblos, the National Palace and a Cathedral dating back to the 1800's, in addition to an eternal flame burning to represent their national liberation.  With a better understanding of their history, we next visited a giant statue of Sandino, another prominent historical figure and "Robin Hood" to the local Nicaraguan people.  The statue look out point offered views of Nicaragua's entire capital city of Managua.

Our first volleyball match against the Nicaraguan national team proved to be an experience like no other.  We all had to adapt to the facilities and the language barrier.  A mid-game thunder & lightening storm made hearing impossible in the gym, forcing our team to communicate through hand signals and work together as a unit.  The sound of the rain pouring down on the metal roof was loud enough to drown out one's owns thoughts.   Our competition was victorious but gracious and friendly as we posed with arms around each other for a post-game photo.   The first 24hrs provided warm memories and set an adventurous tone for the rest of our tour to follow.
