Union College Nicaragua 2009
Day 4 -
Today was the most adventurous day of our tour because we got to experience a canopy tour by zip-lining through the tops of trees overlooking all of San Juan del Sur.  Everyone looked funny in their helmets and zip-lining harnesses.  As we made or way to the top of the mountain, I think that everyone was nervous probably because we fastened high above the tree-tops and had to be cautious of our hand-positions when breaking or we could lose our fingers!  As we all made it half-way through, we were all a little more comfortable and started to attempt different tricks on the zip-line.  Brooke attempted to do the "super-man" but got stuck 1/2 way in the middle of the line stranded high above the ground.  Our Nicaraguan instructors had to climb out on the line to save her.  In order to bring her back to the next platform, they wrapped their legs around her and pulled her to the next stop by hand.  A Nica-Sandwhich!  This was truly an experience of a life-time that I will never forget.

After the canopy tour, we visited a local school for the mentally disabled.  We spent the day doing arts & crafts with the kids while enjoying the sounds of some local tunes. We made jewelry and pinatas.   Autumn, who never dances, was dragged onto the dance floor by a student.  The high-light was definitely the dance party with the students.  Some of the students had some awesome moves!  The interactions with these local students touched the entire team deeply. After a sweaty morning, we finally headed to the beach for some waves.    Stephanie relentlessly padded for wave after wave on her surfboard.  After tumbling over a few, she got the hang of it by the end and finally caught a few good ones.  The water was warm and we stayed in for hours.  At one point, Sarah, Marlee, Whitney and I got pounded by a huge wave unexpectedly and had to hold on to our bathing suits.  Thankfully, we were the only ones on the beach.

Finally after leaving the beach, we headed up to a look-out point overlooking all of San Juan del Sur.  At the top of the mountain was a giant status of Jesus Christ.  The view from the top was breath-taking.  After a long-day of fun filled activities outside, we enjoyed dinner and live music on the beach at a restaurant called Coquito.    Matty, the lead-singer of the band, surprised us all by performing his final set in a Union volleyball uniform with spandex.  After an evening filled with lots of dancing and singing to familiar songs, we safely returned to the hotel for some rest.  Our last night in San Juan del Sur was definitely a night to remember!
